Before and After Care
A beautiful, long-lasting spray tan requires proper care both before and after the application. Following these steps can help ensure a flawless, even, and natural-looking glow. Before Your Spray Tan (Prep) The prep work you do in the days leading up to your appointment is crucial for a great result.
Exfoliate Thoroughly: This is the most important step. Exfoliating removes dead skin cells, which creates a smooth canvas for the tan. Do this 24 hours before your appointment. Use an oil-free scrub or an exfoliating mitt, paying extra attention to rougher areas like elbows, knees, hands, and feet.
Shave or Wax in Advance: All hair removal should be done at least 24 hours before your spray tan. Shaving or waxing too close to the appointment can leave pores open, causing the tanning solution to settle in them and create a dotted appearance.
Avoid Barriers: On the day of your spray tan, your skin should be completely clean and free of any products. This means no lotions, moisturizers, deodorants, perfumes, or makeup, as these can create a barrier that prevents the tanning solution from absorbing evenly.
Shower and Be Dry: Take a shower on the day of your appointment, but avoid using any products other than a gentle, oil-free soap. Avoid Dove and Olay products. Make sure your skin is completely dry before the session.
Wear the Right Clothing: Arrive at your appointment in dark, loose-fitting clothes. This will prevent the fresh tan from rubbing off or smudging. Opt for sweatpants, a loose t-shirt, and flip-flops. After Your Spray Tan (Post-Care) The initial hours and days following your spray tan are critical for its development and longevity.
Stay Dry: For the first 8-12 hours (or as instructed by your technician, especially for a rapid tan), you must avoid all moisture. This includes showering, sweating, washing your hands excessively, and even getting caught in the rain. Any liquid can cause streaking and ruin the developing tan.
Don't Touch Your Skin: Avoid touching your skin or crossing your legs or arms for extended periods to prevent smudging and discoloration.
The First Rinse: When it's time for your first shower, follow your technician's instructions carefully. This first rinse should be quick and use only lukewarm water with no soap or scrubs only your hands to gently rub off the tan. You will see some color washing off—this is just the cosmetic bronzer, not your tan. Gently rinse until the water runs clear and pat yourself dry with a towel. Do not rub! After initial rinse do not use soap or lotions until the tan is fully developed for 24 hours
Moisturize Daily: Hydration is key to making your tan last. Drink lots of water, keep your skin hydrated and glowing.
Protect Your Tan: To extend the life of your tan, avoid anything that exfoliates your skin. This includes: * Long, hot showers or baths * Swimming in chlorinated pools or saltwater * Harsh soaps, body washes, or scrubs avoid Dove and Olay products. * Products containing, mineral oil, acids (like AHA or glycolic acid), retinol, or alcohol * Be Mindful of Shaving: Shaving is a form of exfoliation and can cause your tan to fade faster. If you must shave, do so gently and use a moisturizing shaving cream or a hair conditioner.
